It is becoming increasingly apparent among healthcare professionals and researchers in the field of hypertension, that the traditional practice of relying on arbitrary blood pressure measurements obtained in the clinic or a doctor’s office setting, is not representative of one?s true pressure within the arteries and is not a reliable predictor of the risk of damage to the blood vessels and related organs, known as target organ damage, caused by the elevated pressure. This is partly due to the fact that the traditional approach has been to perform arbitrary reading once per month or even once every 3 months in a doctor’s office or clinic, which is too small a number of readings to be representative of one’s arterial pressure on a whole.

There are also many factors that can affect one’s arterial pressure reading in a doctor?s office that are not operative outside of the doctor?s office. One illustration of this is the white-coat hypertension, a phenomenon in which a patient?s pressure is high in the doctor?s office but not elevated when measured outside of the doctor?s office, particularly at home. Conversely, there is another group of patients, usually younger patients, who tend have normal readings in the doctor?s office but elevated readings outside of the doctor’s office. This is known as masked hypertension. It is estimated that 12 million people exhibit white coat hypertension and 20 million people have masked hypertension. This is important because, although doctors generally follow patients that have white coat hypertension, they don’t usually treat the condition since arterial pressure is normal outside the office. On the other hand people with masked hypertension normally would not be treated because of normal readings in the doctor?s office, but obviously need to be treated since their arterial pressure is elevated outside of the doctor?s office which is where they spend most of their time.

Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring with a machine which is worn on the arm and connected to a box worn on the belt that records reading every 15-30 minutes for the 24 hour period is considered to be most representative of one?s true arterial pressure and risk for vessel and related organ damage, but because of the expense of these machines measuring readings several times per day with wrist and cuff machines is an acceptable alternative. Although many of the monitoring-machine manufactures recommend performing readings at the same time each day and waiting at least five minutes in between readings if multiple readings are taking, experts in the field of hypertension recommend performing three readings in rapid succession in the morning and three readings in rapid succession at night and don’t necessarily restrict the timing of the readings. The multiplicity of readings allows calculation of an average reading and recognition of significant variability of readings in some individuals. Variation in the timing of readings allows one to determine the effect that variable such as exercise, watching television, or consuming caffeine or alcohol has on readings.

In addition to increasing the diagnosis of hypertension, the data obtained from home monitoring can better enable doctors and other healthcare professionals make more rational and appropriate treatment decisions to improve blood pressure control. For example, if a patient is taking anti-hypertensive medication once daily at 8:00 AM but readings are consistently higher than target between 6:00 AM and 8:00 PM but normal at other times and perhaps somewhat low at night, it might be indicative of the fact that most of the medication has cleared the body two to three hours prior to the next scheduled dose, in which case the doctor might decide that night-time dosing or twice daily dosing is more appropriate.

For healthcare professionals to make optimal use of one’s home monitoring endeavors the data must be presented to them in an organized and interpretable format. Although charts with hand-written data indicating the date, time and readings are generally acceptable, an ideal format would be have the charted information printed out from computer-generated entries with graphs generated based on the charted data. This is all performed by the ambulatory blood pressure monitors, but again, they are fairly expensive (ranging from $500.00 - $2,000.00). A very workable alternative however, is to use a desktop-based or Internet-based blood pressure tracker program which allows the manual input of data from the home monitor. The blood pressure tracker program saves the charted data and generates a time graph which can be presented to one’s doctor at the time of an office visit or transmitted via the Internet prior to a visit. Microsoft provides a free Internet-based program known as Microsoft Healthvault Beta at the time of the writing of this article. Another free program which I highly recommend is a desktop application, Blood Pressure Tracker by SoundTells - Software for Health. In addition performing all of the aforementioned functions, it affords greater privacy because it is not Internet-based.

In summary, home blood pressure monitoring is more representative of one’s true arterial pressure because several readings at different times of the day can be taken. Because of the multiplicity of readings, home monitoring is a better predictor of risk of target organ damage caused by elevated pressure. The frequency of readings also allows healthcare professionals to observe trends and variables which affect one’s blood pressure and thus make better and informed treatment decisions to improve control. Better control in principle should reduce the frequency of doctor’s visits and target organ damage, both of which should curtail medical expenses.

It is safe to describe Anxiety disorder as the next stage of GAD because when you suffer from panic disorder you would experience all the symptoms, only on a more acute scale. The difference between GAD and panic disorder is that the former lasts for a long time while the latter is more intense and often causes serious health problems.

The causes of panic disorders are usually external stressors; things that attack your feeling of security and well-being. For example, panic attacks are usually experienced following the death of a spouse, parent or child, loss of job, financial loss and the like. While GAD is widely accepted and willingly treated, panic disorder, which is normally referred to the psychiatric ward is seen as a sign of madness and therefore summarily rejected.

It is therefore very important that you are able to recognize panic disorder when it affects you or anyone you know. It also vital that you understand that suffering from panic disorder does not mean you are crazy. Such condition needs to be immediately checked and treated or it would escalate to serious - sometimes even fatal - health problems.

The telltale symptoms you should be looking out for are:

Chest pain - the pain is acute and sharp, very similar to what you would feel if you had a heart attack. This is why in most cases doctors immediately would refer you to an ECG.

Fainting spells - panic attacks often causes blood drain away from the brain for very brief periods, enough to cause you to faint.

Acute nausea and abdominal pain - a sudden jump in the acid formation in the stomach would cause vomiting and nausea as well as sharp pain in the stomach.

Mental breakdown signs - you would experience a feeling of doom, hopelessness, despair and pessimism. You would feel as if somebody shut all the doors around you and there is nowhere to go anymore.

Phobias and death thoughts - you will find your thoughts gravitating towards morbidity and suddenly you would be too aware of your mortality. Death would look imminent and scary - even though you suffer from no fatal diseases.

Profuse sweating - you would find yourself breaking into a sweat over every small problem you encounter in your daily routine. It would be as if fate (or God) is conspiring against you and everything you touch is turning into dust.

Trembling - very often you would find yourself trembling uncontrollably. Sometimes this would be accompanied by the compulsion to burst into tears or run for cover away from the company of all people

Surreal feeling - gradually, you would feel removed from realty. It would seem to you that you are watching yourself from outside your body; whatever happens to you happens to someone else and you are a helpless spectator.

Take careful note of all these symptoms and if you find four or more in yourself or anyone you know, seek of help seek medical help. Accept the referral to the psychiatric ward because panic disorder affects not only the chemical balance in the body and brain but also the functioning of the mind; the way you think. You need guidance to realign your thoughts side by side with the medication you receive so you could make a fast recovery. Psychiatric help would also help you to cope with the stressors and teach you how to short-circuit their impact on your mind. This is a great question with so many people hitting our age. Weight gained after menopause seems to be harder to lose.

It is very common to put on weight at this time and while some of this may be due to lifestyle changes, that does not explain why suddenly women develop a tendency to put on weight at different parts of the body, especially the abdomen, while any weight gained when younger tended to be centered on the hips and thighs.

Hormonal changes do have a part to play in this, although the process is not completely understood. At menopause a woman stops ovulating, her monthly menstruation periods end, and her body produces much lower levels of the female hormone estrogen which is responsible for the ovulation process.

Low estrogen has been shown to cause weight gain in animals and it almost certainly is the reason why female bodies change shape.

Reversing course to lose unwanted pounds requires strict attention to healthy eating habits, an active lifestyle and diligence to keep it all on track. If you do not adjust your eating habits you will probably find that your weight increases. A person of 60 just does not need as many calories as a person of 40.

Hormone therapy with estrogen is sometimes prescribed to control menopausal symptoms. Many women will be surprised to hear that studies have shown that hormone therapy does not cause weight gain.

Some women experience bloating and water retention in the early stages of hormone therapy but this is usually temporary and they have not gained any fat.

Hormone therapy can reduce the risk of heart disease by preventing the changes in storage of body fat around the abdomen and lowering cholesterol. However, hormone therapy has been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer in some studies.

There’s no magic to avoiding weight gain as you get older. The strategies at any age remain the same: Watch what you eat and get that body moving.

Watch what you eat - Eat a healthy, low fat diet with plenty of fiber, and avoid sugar and sugar products. Pay attention to the foods you’re eating and slightly reduce the amount of calories you consume each day.

Choose a varied diet composed mainly of fruits and vegetables that will help you to safely cut back on calories and lose weight. Reduce the amount of high fat foods you consume.

You notice I say slightly reduce calories vs. substantially the reason being is to prevent your body from responding to the ?starvation effect? by conserving energy and making extra pounds harder to shed. Weight maintenance is a gradual but consistent process.

Move that Body. Aerobic exercise boosts your metabolism and helps you burn fat. Strength training exercises increase muscle mass, boost your metabolism and strengthen your bones.

Spend more time doing the things you really enjoy that also get you moving. Do more gardening. Take longer walks or start riding a bike. Your goal is to be active for a total of 30 minutes or more daily.

Accept the changes to the shape of your body. If you are not overweight, but simply have a thicker waist and slimmer legs, that is fine.

Consult with your doctor before starting any exercise program if you have any medical conditions or your fitness levels are low. Your doctor can also help with symptoms of menopause and weight gain.

The ailment known as hypothyroidism is something that more women than men experience and this is due to a hyper active thyroid gland. The reasons why a woman may suffer from hyperthyroidism may vary and some of these reasons often have certain symptoms that women find hard to cope with. Some women who have hyperthyroidism experience weight loss when they find that they have this ailment. But what is the relationship between weight gain and this problem? Is it true that some women do not lose weight with this problem but instead gain weight from it?

Weight Problems Due to Hyperthyroidism

While there are some women who claim that they gained weight due to hyperthyroidism, the more common occurrence in women who have this problem is weight loss. There are a few women who do claim that they gained considerable weight after they have been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. Some women who suffer from this predicament actually suffer from hyperthyroidism due to what is called Graves’ Disease. This then has an effect on your metabolism and makes you gain weight and makes it harder to lose that extra weight.

Aromatherapy Oils and Their Uses

Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils from various kinds of plants to heal the body, relieve physical pain, and to stable a person’s mood. The essential oils that are used are concentrated extracts from the different parts of the plant. The concentrated oil can come from the roots, the bark, the leaves, seeds, and even the flowers. Aromatherapy using these oils can be applied through a massage, facial, bath, or complete body treatment. But there is not just one oil used in an aromatherapy massage.

A massage therapist will typically use about five oils combined into a mixture. The different oils that are used will depend on what the person seeking the treatment is looking to achieve from the massage. Someone who is struggling with sore muscles will probably be given an oil mixture that contains eucalyptus and peppermint. Someone else who simply wants a relaxing massage may get bergamot or lavender in the oil mix. When someone comes in for an aromatherapy massage, what he or she is trying to achieve or get relief from will be discussed. It is then that the various oils placed into the mix will be decided upon.

Even though some people may not fully know the benefits that come from aromatherapy uses, they will once they give it one chance. It takes just a few moments with the oils to see and feel a difference. And aromatherapy oils are not to be confused with perfumes. Perfumes contain chemicals where aromatherapy oils are natural oils from plants. This is not to say though that all of the various oils are non-toxin. There are a lot of them that are not for human consumption but there are a couple that can be as they have some dietary benefits to them.

The best thing to do is to not use any in your foods unless you have been clearly instructed to do so by a professional. It is also important to make sure that you are purchasing only high quality aromatherapy oils. If you are purchasing weak oils then you are not going to get all of the benefits that you want. You will also find that you are wasting your money so make sure that the oils you get are not watered down.

When you are looking for a place to buy your oils from, make sure that it is a company that focuses on the types of products that you need. These are the companies that know what they are doing and will be able to assist you with any questions should any come up. The oils from the drug stores or the department stores are the oils that you want to avoid. They are cheap and if you have questions, there is not going to be anyone there suitable to answer your concerns. In order to make sure that you are not wasting your time or money, make sure that you are doing business with a company that you can trust such as a company that takes their line of work seriously.

Allergy and Mental Disease

The following may come as a surprise to most people, including most medical doctors.

Most mental disease is caused by unsuspected brain allergies!

This fact was illuminated for me by Dr Marshall Mandell in the early 80?s. He appeared on the Phil Donahue show, and had videos of persons with mental problems caused or worsened by allergen testing. He was the first to name such as ?brain allergies?.

In 1982, Dr Von Hilsheimer introduced the first End-Point-Titration allergy testing into Florida, and I worked with him at an allergy clinic in Orlando. We amazed several MD allergists in that clinic with depression and many other cases being solved.

During that time, I studied allergy/sensitivity extensively. I found a list of mental diseases caused by allergens that surprised me. None of my previous experience and learning in psychology had prepared me for such. I found the following in a ?standard? text on allergies as ?Mental Symptoms?. It surprised me, and probably will you.

Schizophrenia, depression, hyperactivity (ADD/ADHD), Emotional instability or hypersensitivity, Insomnia, Chronic fatigue, crying jags, stuttering, excessive daydreaming, anxiety, panic attacks, withdrawn, listless, seizures, aggressive behavior, anger, irritability, silly, tense, restless, excited, agitated, behavior problems in children, difficulty concentrating, memory loss, poor comprehension, confusion, impaired attention, obsessive thoughts, compulsive behavior, feelings of unreality, disorientation, false beliefs or delusions, hallucinations, suicidal, feel like hurting self.

While giving a 4 day orthomolecular seminar in Soviet Georgia in 2000, I was introduced to the latest EEG biofeedback therapy of raising the amplitude of the brain waves just above Alpha, in the range of 12-15 Hz. (later named the SMR brain wave) In the discussion, I remembered that list of mental diseases caused by allergens. I then proposed the following theory: ?Raising the SMR brain wave somehow changed the affect of allergens on the brain. To date, no other theory fits the data.

When I returned to the US, I started the first leasing of EEG BF equipment for home use. As you can imagine this did not endear me to the clinicians who were charging up to $250 per half hour for the service. The actual operation is so simple that anyone with a high school education can easily learn how to do it, although the learned clinicians will (as usual) protest the necessity of a professional approach. (This in spite of no record of harm being done to anyone, and no license being required to practice this simple therapy.)

In 2001, Dr Jiri Tyrl of the Czech Biofeedback Society listed papers about EEG biofeedback that showed the following mental diseases as being either cured or greatly improved by this feedback:

Epilepsy; ADD/ADHD, Learning Disabilities, Academic-Cognitive Enhancement; Anxiety Disorders, PTSD, Sleep Disorders, Depression, Hemispheric Asymmetry, Anger, Addictive Disorders, Brain Injury, Stroke, Coma, Spasticity, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Autoimmune Dysfunctions, Headache and other Pain, Schizophrenia, Obsessive Compulsive Disorders, Parkinson’s Dystonia, Tourette’s Syndrome, Autism; Cognitive Decline with Aging, Asthma Hypertension Dissociative Disorders, Creativity, Optimal Functioning, Criminal Recidivism.

This list was further proof (to me at least) that allergens were involved in much more mental disease that was suspected, and that this particular EEG biofeedback (now known as raising the SMR brain wave), DID somehow relieve this allergen susceptibility. (Both my wife and I have either ?cured? or alleviated lifelong allergies.)

In 2004, one of those comic light bulbs went on above my head, and I realized that it should be possible to do the same thing - namely raise the SMR brain wave - by use of subliminal messaging.

I put out a call for volunteers, and got over 20, who sent me weekly emails for 4 weeks. Most were various types of ADD/ADHD, with a few depressives and insomniacs mixed in. The results definitely showed that both my allergen theory and my subliminal theory were correct.

In 6 more volunteer tests since that time, we have shown that this therapy (named Neuroliminal Training) is at least as effective as EEG Biofeedback (aka Neurofeedback) for ADD/ADHD, depression, insomnia, autism, and epilepsy.

We?re going even further with a current test that includes Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, PTSD, Depression of all types, etc. This test will end in January 2009.
